How to Leash Train Your New Puppy

The video below is a great example of what you can expect from a puppy that has not been leashed trained at all. It usually only takes a week of 5 to 10 minute sessions per day before 8 week old puppies get used to walking on leash.

I would suggest using at least a 6 foot leash so your puppy has some room to make mistakes. Obviously you don't want to pull on the leash too much but you can give little corrections like a quick pull toward you if your pup gets off track or distracted by something and won't come to you. You just don't want them to feel like you are pulling them. It's ok if they try to back up and cause the leash to pull tight. Usually you can just give him a second and he will make a move towards you.

Your puppy is testing your leadership ability at this age so be firm and make good eye contact :)

I wanted to do a quick review of some of the websites I like to visit regarding all things dog (and especially Aussie). I visit most of these sites weekly, if not daily.

Dogstar Daily

Dr. Ian Dunbar helped to start this website. He is my favorite trainer and he has a great no-nonsense, gentle approach to dog training. He does seminars all over the US and has many books and DVDs out. He has assembled a skilled group of people to post and blog on the Dog Star Daily site. If you are looking for help in a certain area of training this site will likely have the answer you are looking for.

APD Book and DVD List

This is one of the best book and DVD lists I have found on the internet. It has everything from training a puppy to training a fearful adult dog. These are the best of the best in their respective categories.

An excellent site to determine if the food you are feeding your dog is good or bad for them. I have fed all of our Aussies Taste of the Wild for 2 years now and I can't imagine switching to anything else. This site is very helpful and even has a rating system that allows dog owners to vote on the dog foods they like or dislike.

How to Choose a Well-Socialized Puppy

I receive questions from time to time about what to look for when selecting a puppy. As a Breeder, I have the advantage of being able to evaluate multiple puppies as each litter is born and each puppy advances through its early stages of life. It wasn't always that way though. A few years ago when I got my first puppy it was all new to me and I had to rely on a mentor who had a great deal of experience in raising and socializing pups.

When Hemi (picture above), our first Aussie, and I attended his first Basic Puppy Training Course, he stole the show. The trainer commented that he was the most outgoing and sociable of the group. This wasn't due to him being a smarter dog than the other breeds there. It was because his Breeder took the time and put effort into a socialization program for the puppies in his litter. Because he was so well-socialized, he was much more easily trainable and helped the other puppies in his class come out of their shell. There was an obvious difference between his confidence and the fearfulness of the other dogs in his class.

This is why I feel socializing puppies as early as possible (starting at Day 3) is so important. Here are some questions you should be asking yourself when viewing and handling a prospective puppy to take home.

Does the puppy approach all family members with confidence?
Is the puppy accepting of you handling and petting him?
How quickly does the puppy "bounce back" after hearing a startling noise? He should within a few seconds.
Hold a piece of treat or kibble in your fingers and call the puppy to you. Ask him to sit. Treat when he responds.

Don't expect the puppy to know how to be completely obedient and know many tricks. This is generally the responsibility of the new owner, but some Breeders will take the time to teach each puppy to come and sit. The main thing to look for is responsiveness and willingness to please.

These are just a few of the things you can do to ensure you are getting a dog that will bring you, your family, and the pup many years of joy together. Finding a puppy with these qualities will save you money and frustration in the long run.

Choosing a Healthy Dog Food

Many important questions race through your head as a new puppy owner. Finding a good, healthy food was one of the toughest decisions I had to make when I brought Hemi (our first Mini Aussie) home in 2009. Thankfully, I made a friend and mentor in Kim Dostie of Innovative Farms. She got me started off on the right foot by suggesting Taste of the Wild since that was what she feeds all of her Aussies.

That doesn't mean you should go out and buy this particular brand just because someone says it works well for their dogs. There are many other top tier brands like Orijen or ZiwiPeak. There are many things to consider when choosing a dog food and I have found that the best place to compare them is at your local store or wherever it is that you buy dog food.

You should always look at the ingredient list on the back or side of the package. You want a dog's diet to be as similar as possible to what it would be if they were living in the wild. This means no preservatives like humans are accustomed to consuming. The first three to five ingredients should be a known meat or meat meal that provides a good source of protein. The food should also have a fair amount of fruits and vegetables and be relatively grain-free. Grains are not a natural part of a canine diet. Grain-Free dog foods are great for dogs with allergy problems. Potatoes are a good alternative to grains.

Lastly, always remember to change your dog's diet over slowly. If you introduce the new food all at once he/she will likely end up with bowel problems. Gradual food introduction also helps to detect any change in your dog's reaction to the change, such as allergies.

There is plenty of information out there to help you make an informed decision. Take the time and make the best choice for you and your pup.

I have personally tested 3 of the top brands, and while the top 2 are slightly better quality (Ziwi Peak and Orijen) they are also much more expensive. For example, Ziwi Peak is approximately $20 for 2 lbs of food, while Taste of the Wild is about $40 for 30 lbs of food. That being said, you can't beat the value of Taste of the Wild. So, my top 3 would look like this...
